Abstract:

Hawaii is losing doctors at an alarming rate and to combat the shortage the state is looking to telemedicine to fill the health care gap.  Telemedicine in one of its simplest forms connects physicians that practice in one location with patients in another location.  Utilizing the Internet and real-time video conferencing systems, patients are able to interact with physicians and receive medical services they otherwise would not have access to.  While not always a substitute for face to face visits, telemedicine can provide many benefits to patients as well as doctors, such as saving time, and costs. This article describes Hawaiiís expanding use of telemedicine systems and some important points to consider.
